B&W newborn portraits in studio – Claire and her parents

B&W newborn portraits on the blog this week. During our consultation, Claire’s mom, Kelly, said they wanted a minimalist look, with “lots about her” and “not a lot of props”.

Claire and her parents visited our studio in Sacramento when she was just 8 days old.

Mischa LOVES setting up the studio for b&w newborn portraits.

The session began with Claire & her parents in front of a black background.

Then we moved on to some poses of Claire on her own.

Black & white photography is a perfect way to capture the details of a sleepy newborn. The texture of their hair, the soft roundness of their tiny noses and their adorably pouty little lips.

Fuzzy blankets and hand woven offer additional texture to emphasize the softness of Claire’s newborn skin…without being too much of a “prop”.

Of course we’re always hoping to catch the elusive newborn smile. Could it be gas? maybe, but it’s a sweet mischievous smile nonetheless.

This may not be your run standard, pastel & Pinterest-y, newborn shoot angle, but the leading lines and contrast make it one of my favorites of the session.

Whether you are drawn to a minimalist look as well, or you prefer busier patterns, 8 days old is a perfect age for newborn portraits and choosing to do b&w newborn portraits with Mischa means you’ll end up with timeless, artistic images – whatever your style.
